Exercises / Intervals / Lesson 1

Counting staff intervals

Identify seconds through sixths by counting line and space positions.

Learn the rule

CONCEPT 1

Count both notes

From C to E, count C–D–E: three letter names means a third. Adjacent line/space positions make a second.

CONCEPT 2

Staff spacing is not semitone spacing

At this stage you are identifying the interval number. Major, minor and perfect describe its quality later.
