Exercises / Rhythm reading / Lesson 2

Dots and extensions

Recognize how dots change duration in notes and rests.

Learn the rule

CONCEPT 1

A dot adds half

A dotted half note is 2 + 1 = 3 beats. A dotted quarter is 1 + ½ = 1½ beats.

CONCEPT 2

The same rule applies to rests

Dotted rests extend silence by the same proportion. Always calculate the original value first.

TRY IT BEFORE THE QUIZ

Change a symbol. Count the beats.

In this course, a quarter note is one beat. A dot adds half the original value, while a rest means silence for the same length of time.
